Based on a twelve-tone scale, the modern pipa is a versatile fretted instrument that can play Western music as well as traditional Chinese music, making collaborations with western classical and other musicians possible.

Wan and Macias

Formed while students of music at the University of California, Irvine, the pipa and guitar duo of Wan Yeung and George Macias create a blend of music which bridges cultures, continents, and sounds.

George Macias started playing the guitar at the age of 14 where he was taught by his father. His formal studies began under Richard Flores at CSU Stanisalaus in Turlock, CA and he finished his degree in Music Education at New Mexico State University under Kerry Alt. George received his Master of Fine Arts in Guitar and Lute Performance at UC Irvine with John Schneiderman. He performs and teaches in Pennsylvania.
